Cyanine5.5 NHS ester是一种脂溶性荧光菁染料，NHS可以和氨基进行反应连接用于标记抗体蛋白等，除了用于标记多肽，蛋白和寡核苷酸氨基外，也常被用于小动物活体成像。因为它避开了很多物质都有吸收的可见光区，吸收的近红外光在生物组织中的穿透深度较大，而激发的荧光受生物组织本底的影响较少，所以能够在深层组织产生信号。尤其是在700～900 nm的范围中，水和血红蛋白的吸收都很少，近红外光可以深入组织内部多达15 cm。同时，这类染料还拥有紫外光区染料和同位素标记无法具备的生物安全性。Cyanine 5.5(cy 5.5）是常用的近红外荧光染料。
