Crocetin, also known as Transcrocetin, is a natural apocarotenoid dicarboxylic acid that is found in the crocus flower and Gardenia jasminoides (fruits). Crocetin is also anticarcinogenic, antineoplastic, antioxidant and protective agent. It forms brick red crystals with a melting point of 285 °C. Crocetin protects ultraviolet A-induced oxidative stress and cell death in skin in vitro and in vivo. Crocetin protects against hypertension and cerebral thrombogenesis in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats. Crocin and crocetin may provide neuroprotection in rats by reducing the production of various neurotoxic molecules, based on an in-vitro cell study.
