Betulin is a naturally occurring triterpene commonly isolated from the bark of birch trees. It can be converted to betulinic acid (the alcohol group replaced by a carboxylic acid group), which is biologically more active than betulin itself. Betulin has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory activity and may be useful for the treatment of renal carcinoma and auto-immune disorders.
